AISI 304 vs. AISI 316 Stainless Steel

Selected Powerful Machinery products are available in AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel, including certain eye bolt and turnbuckle models. Material availability varies by product, size, and configuration, so the required stainless steel grade should be confirmed against the exact product specification or quotation.

AISI 304

AISI 304 stainless steel provides good general corrosion resistance for many indoor, outdoor, architectural, and industrial applications. Suitability should be confirmed according to the specific product, load requirements, exposure conditions, and service environment.

AISI 316

AISI 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum and generally provides greater resistance than 304 to chloride-related pitting and crevice corrosion. It is commonly specified for coastal, salt-spray, marine-related, and other chloride-exposed environments. Material selection should still consider the exact exposure conditions, temperature, crevices, chemical contact, and the requirements of the specific product.

Match Stainless Hardware to the Service Environment

Material selection should be based on the actual service environment as well as the required product function and mechanical rating. For indoor or general atmospheric service, confirm the required stainless steel grade and finish for the specific application.

For coastal, salt-spray, or other chloride-exposed environments, specify the exposure conditions and frequency of wetting. Where chemical cleaning, process fluids, elevated temperatures, retained moisture, or crevices are involved, provide the relevant chemical, concentration, temperature, and environmental details so material suitability can be reviewed for the exact product.

Finish and Fabrication Details

Surface finish can affect appearance, cleanability, and corrosion performance, while available finish options vary by product and specification. Selected stainless steel products may be available with polished, electropolished, passivated, or other specified surface treatments.

If your project requires a particular finish, surface preparation, custom marking, or fabrication requirement, include it in the RFQ so availability can be confirmed for the exact product.

Lifting-Rated vs. General-Purpose Stainless Steel Hardware

Stainless steel hardware is supplied for different applications and is not necessarily rated for lifting or load handling. Where a component is intended for lifting service, confirm the exact model’s working load limit (WLL) or rated capacity, identification markings, dimensions, connection compatibility, applicable standards, and manufacturer instructions.

General-purpose snap hooks, S-hooks, railing fittings, and similar accessories should only be used in lifting applications when the specific product is expressly rated and documented for that service.

Standards, Ratings, and Documentation

ASME B30.26 covers several categories of detachable rigging hardware used in load-handling applications, including shackles, links, rings, swivels, turnbuckles, eyebolts, hoist rings, wire rope clips, wedge sockets, and rigging blocks. Reference to this standard does not mean that every stainless steel product on this page conforms to ASME B30.26 or is intended for lifting service.

For U.S. construction applications, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.251 requires applicable rigging equipment to have permanently affixed and legible manufacturer-prescribed identification showing the recommended safe working load, and prohibits loading above that rated capacity.

For procurement, specify the applicable standard, required product rating, test reports, certificates, material documentation, traceability, and any third-party inspection requirements in the RFQ. These requirements should be confirmed for the exact product and order.

Yes. Include each required product type, size or drawing, stainless steel grade, quantity, finish, service environment, and any documentation or packaging requirements in the same RFQ so the complete requirement can be reviewed together.

Drawing-based requirements can be reviewed where custom dimensions, connection geometry, markings, surface finish, or other project-specific specifications are required. Include the drawing, quantity, material grade, and applicable technical requirements with the RFQ.

Custom marking, labeling, packaging, and other project-specific requirements can be included in the RFQ. Availability should be confirmed for the specific product, quantity, and order specification.
